A complete step-by-step guide to installing your Vsons Design post-mounted mailbox. Most installations take 45-60 minutes with basic tools.

What You'll Need

Tools Required:

  • Post hole digger or power auger
  • Level (4-foot recommended)
  • Drill with bits
  • Wrench or socket set
  • Measuring tape
  • Shovel

Materials Required:

  • Post
  • Quick-setting concrete mix (50 lbs / 22 kg)
  • Gravel for drainage (optional but recommended)
  • All mounting hardware (included with your mailbox)

Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes
Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Cost of Materials: Approximately $30-50 USD

Step 1: Choose the Location

Select a location that is easily accessible from the road and meets local regulations.

USPS Requirements:

  • Mailbox must be 6-12 inches from the curb edge
  • Bottom of mailbox should be 41-45 inches from ground level
  • Face of mailbox should be parallel to the road

Important: Check with your local municipality or HOA for specific placement requirements before digging.

Step 2: Dig the Post Hole

Dig a hole for your post that will provide stable support.

Hole Specifications:

  • Diameter: 8-10 inches wide
  • Depth: 24-30 inches deep (go deeper in areas with frost - check local frost line)
  • For extra stability in harsh climates, dig 36 inches deep

Pro Tip: Add 2-3 inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage. This prevents water accumulation and extends post life.

Step 3: Set the Post

Place the post in the hole and ensure it's perfectly vertical.

Instructions:

  1. Insert the post into the hole
  2. Use a level on two adjacent sides of the post
  3. Adjust until the post is perfectly vertical in all directions
  4. Have someone hold the post steady while you work

Important: The post must remain level throughout the concrete pour. Consider using temporary braces or stakes to hold it in place.

Step 4: Pour and Set the Concrete

Mix and pour quick-setting concrete to secure the post.

Instructions:

  1. Mix quick-setting concrete according to package directions
  2. Pour concrete around the post, filling to about 2 inches below ground level
  3. Continue checking the post with a level as you pour
  4. Use a stick to remove air bubbles by pushing it into the concrete
  5. Slope the top of the concrete away from the post for water drainage

Drying Time: Allow concrete to cure for 24-48 hours before mounting the mailbox.

Step 5: Mount the Mailbox

Once concrete is fully cured, attach your mailbox to the post.

Instructions:

  1. Measure 41-45 inches from the ground to the bottom of where the mailbox will sit
  2. Mark the mounting points on the post
  3. Pre-drill pilot holes if necessary
  4. Position the mailbox mounting bracket
  5. Secure with the included mounting hardware
  6. Tighten all screws firmly but don't overtighten

Alignment Check:

  • Mailbox should face the road
  • Door should open away from traffic
  • Mailbox should be level (use a level on top)

Step 6: Final Adjustments and Testing

Verify everything is secure and functional.

Final Checklist:

  • [ ] Mailbox is level and secure
  • [ ] Height is 41-45 inches from ground to mailbox bottom
  • [ ] Door opens and closes smoothly
  • [ ] If locking model: test the lock with provided keys
  • [ ] Flag moves freely
  • [ ] All screws are tight
  • [ ] Post is still vertical

Test the mailbox: Open and close the door several times to ensure smooth operation.

Maintenance Tips

Post Care:

  • Inspect the post annually for rot or damage
  • Apply wood sealer or stain every 2-3 years (for wooden post)
  • Check concrete base for cracks

Mailbox Care:

  • Clean with mild soap and water 2-3 times per year
  • Lubricate hinges and locks annually
  • Check mounting screws and tighten if needed

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Post leans after installation:

  • Concrete wasn't allowed to fully cure
  • Hole wasn't deep enough for soil conditions
  • Solution: Re-set the post with deeper hole or additional bracing

Mailbox door won't close properly:

  • Mounting is not level
  • Hardware is overtightened causing warping
  • Solution: Loosen slightly and re-level

Mail carrier can't reach mailbox:

  • Too far from curb (should be 6-12 inches)
  • Wrong height (should be 41-45 inches to bottom)
  • Solution: Re-position to meet USPS guidelines
