When You Need a Post-Mounted Mailbox
A post-mounted mailbox is required when your mail carrier delivers to the curb rather than to your door. This is the standard delivery method in most rural areas, many suburban neighborhoods, and any postal route where carriers don't leave their vehicle. Your local post office determines which delivery method applies to your address.
Post-mounted mailboxes are required when:
- Your mail carrier delivers curbside (the majority of U.S. residential routes)
- Your local USPS office requires a curbside mailbox for your address
- You live on a rural or semi-rural postal route
- Your neighborhood has centralized curbside delivery points
USPS placement requirements: Position the mailbox 41" to 45" from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox opening. Place the post 6" to 8" back from the curb. These measurements ensure your mail carrier can reach the mailbox from their vehicle without leaving the road.
Not sure if you need post-mounted or wall-mounted? Check with your local post office or see our wall-mounted vs post-mounted comparison guide. For full USPS specifications, see our mailbox delivery requirements page.

USPS height requirement: Position the bottom of the mailbox opening 41" to 45" from the road surface. Place the post 6" to 8" back from the curb.
USPS Mailbox Requirements & Compliance
All Vsons Design post-mounted mailboxes are USPS Size C2 approved — meaning they meet federal specifications for residential curbside mail delivery. Here's what USPS requires:
Size: USPS-approved mailboxes must meet minimum interior dimensions for standard letter mail, magazines, and small packages. All Vsons Design post-mounted models (Anthony, Jeremy, Era, Eden) meet or exceed Size C2 requirements.
Height: Position the bottom of the mailbox opening 41" to 45" from the road surface. This ensures your carrier can reach the mailbox from their delivery vehicle.
Setback: Place the post 6" to 8" back from the curb. If you don't have a raised curb, contact your local postmaster for guidance.
Visibility: Your house number must be displayed on the mailbox. Vsons Design mailboxes support custom house numbers via vinyl decals (aluminum models) or laser engraving (stainless steel models).
Post safety: The Federal Highway Administration recommends posts that bend or break away on impact — such as a 4×4 wood support or 2" diameter metal pipe. Avoid heavy concrete posts or rigid structures. All Vsons Design aluminum and stainless steel posts meet this guideline.

Materials & Construction
Every Vsons Design post-mounted mailbox is built from one of three material grades:
Powder-Coated Aluminum (5052-H32) — 14-gauge, 100% rust-proof. Will not corrode in any climate, including coastal and high-humidity environments. Industrial powder coat resists UV, scratches, and fading. Our most popular material for post-mounted mailboxes. Available in black and white.
304 Stainless Steel — 16-gauge, brushed or powder-coated finish. Architectural-grade stainless that resists rust in most residential environments. Note: stainless steel 304 can develop surface spots in direct salt exposure (coastal or de-icing salt). For saltwater environments, choose aluminum or 316L marine grade instead.
316L Marine-Grade Stainless Steel — Contains molybdenum for superior resistance to salt spray, chlorides, and acidic environments. Required for homes within 1 mile of saltwater. Available on Anthony and Jeremy models.
All materials are sourced from American suppliers and manufactured in North America.

Locking & Security Options
Curbside mailboxes are more vulnerable to mail theft than wall-mounted mailboxes because they're positioned near the road, away from your home. Vsons Design offers an optional keyed locking system on the Anthony and Jeremy models across all material grades.
The locking mechanism allows your carrier to deliver mail through the front door opening as normal. Once closed, the mailbox can only be opened with your key. This protects sensitive mail — financial documents, checks, credit cards, medications — from unauthorized access.
Models with locking options: Anthony (all materials), Jeremy (all materials).
Locking is especially recommended for:
- Mailboxes positioned far from the house or out of sight
- Rural routes with infrequent mail checks
- Neighborhoods with reported mail theft
- Vacation homes and seasonal residences
Customization & Personalization
Every Vsons Design post-mounted mailbox can be personalized at checkout:
Aluminum models (Anthony B, Jeremy, Era, Eden) — Precision-cut vinyl house numbers and custom text on the sides. Multiple colors available. Durable outdoor-rated vinyl that withstands weather and UV exposure.
Stainless steel models (Anthony S, Anthony BE, Jeremy S) — Laser engraving on up to 3 sides. The laser removes the powder coat to reveal brushed stainless steel underneath — a permanent, weather-proof personalization that will never peel or fade. Front door features laser-engraved stainless steel numbers in black.
USPS requirement: Your house number must be visible on the mailbox. Vsons Design personalization options ensure compliance while elevating the design.
Multi-Mailbox Installations & HOA Orders
For properties with multiple units, duplexes, or HOA communities requiring uniform mailbox installations, Vsons Design offers side-by-side mounting supports that hold 2 or 3 mailboxes on a single post.
Side-by-Side Mounting Support (2 mailboxes) — Stainless steel bracket for Anthony ($50) or Jeremy ($55) models. Mounts two mailboxes on one Vsons Design post.
Side-by-Side Mounting Support (3 mailboxes) — Stainless steel bracket for Anthony ($70) or Jeremy ($80) models. Mounts three mailboxes on one post.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a post-mounted mailbox?
A post-mounted mailbox is a mail receptacle installed on a freestanding post near the road for curbside delivery. The mail carrier delivers from their vehicle without leaving the road. Post-mounted mailboxes are the standard delivery method in most rural and suburban U.S. neighborhoods and are required by USPS on routes designated for curbside delivery.
Are Vsons Design post-mounted mailboxes USPS approved?
Yes. All Vsons Design post-mounted mailboxes — Anthony, Jeremy, Era, and Eden — are USPS Size C2 approved. They meet federal specifications for residential curbside delivery including interior dimensions, door opening, and flag positioning compatibility. Position the bottom of the mailbox opening 41" to 45" from the road surface for compliance.
What post do I need for a Vsons Design mailbox?
Vsons Design offers aluminum in-ground posts (2×2, 2×4, and 4×4), stainless steel in-ground and surface-mount posts, and an architect custom post. All Vsons Design mailboxes are also compatible with standard 4×4 wood posts using our stainless steel bracket-adapter. The right post depends on your installation surface (soil vs concrete), wind conditions, and aesthetic preference.
Can I lock a post-mounted mailbox?
Yes. The Anthony and Jeremy models both offer an optional keyed locking system across all material grades. The lock allows your carrier to deliver mail through the front door as normal, but the mailbox can only be opened with your key. This is especially recommended for rural routes, vacation homes, and mailboxes positioned far from the house.
What is the best material for a curbside mailbox?
Powder-coated aluminum is the most durable option for most climates — it is 100% rust-proof and requires no maintenance. For a premium brushed metal look, 304 stainless steel works well in moderate environments. For coastal homes within 1 mile of saltwater, 316L marine-grade stainless steel or aluminum are the only materials that guarantee zero corrosion. Avoid mild steel or plastic mailboxes — they corrode, crack, or fade within 2–5 years.
What is the difference between the Anthony and Jeremy models?
The Anthony is the standard-width model (8.5" wide) and Vsons Design' best-selling post-mounted mailbox. The Jeremy is the wide-format model (11.5" wide), designed for households that receive large mail, catalogs, magazines, and small packages regularly. Both share the same depth, height, material options, and locking availability.
How do I install a post-mounted mailbox?
For in-ground posts: dig a hole, set the post in concrete, let it cure, then mount the mailbox using the pre-drilled holes and included hardware. For surface-mount posts: bolt the post to an existing concrete surface, then mount the mailbox. USPS requires the bottom of the mailbox opening to be 41–45 inches from the road surface and 6–8 inches back from the curb. Installation typically takes 30–60 minutes plus concrete curing time.
How much does a modern post-mounted mailbox cost?
Vsons Design post-mounted mailboxes range from $135 (Era B aluminum) to $480 (Jeremy wide marine-grade stainless) for the mailbox alone. Mounting posts range from $140 (2×2 aluminum) to $475 (architect custom post). A complete mailbox-and-post setup typically runs $275–$700 USD depending on model, material, and post choice. This places Vsons Design between mass-produced builder-grade mailboxes and custom-fabricated options.
